I can recall being a little kid and wishing and begging for Mom and Dad to decorate the whole exterior of the house in bright, colorful holiday lights. I never won that battle, because Mom always favored the simplistic look of candles in the window, swags of evergreen across the front porch, and tiny white lights in the trees in the backyard (Why only in the back? Because we were the ones who would enjoy it the most, and our windows faced the backyard more than the front of the house). They also have light up flamingos in the front yard, but that’s another tale.
Well, I don’t cringe when I say it like some girlies do, but I’m turning into my mom, and it’s evidenced by my love of amber jewelry, architecture, home construction, and now, white christmas lights. I happily inherited some electric candles, and displayed them for the first time this year in my front windows. Especially with the new siding, I think they look pretty, and bet they’ll look even better with a light coat of snow on the windowsills.
Instead of hanging white lights on the outside of the house (which I may still do once the new front porch is built), I decorated inside by stringing lights around doorways and windows. It’s a cheery, warm place to come home to, even though I’m lacking in the real-christmas-tree department.
Also, once the new front porch is done, the railings will be adorned too (if it’s done before the holidays… eek). Well, if not, now that the deck and pergolas are done, maybe they can be decorated :)
