… finding yesterday’s West Elm rug for just $99 + shipping (still <$130 total!) was a joy when I take the time to compare it’s value to the other rugs that I’ve been eyeing for the living room.
Considering the necessary orientation of the room, we’ll need an area rug that’s longer than 10′ but just shorter than 8′ wide if possible. It’s a lot to ask for, and gets pricy, and it began to feel more and more like we’d have to invest in something custom. And if by custom you’re thinking FLOR tiles, think again because the ones I like for a lush living room use are way out of my budget, considering that we’d need 70-77 sq. ft of coverage. More than anything now, I know that I need to keep hunting, because good, affordable rug fits are out there.
Here are some of my favorites:
Pottery Barn actually offers custom sisal rugs, which I didn’t realize until recently. They’re not really my style (I have indescribable issues with that cloth border that is used around the edge) but to get something sized for the space, they aren’t priced to kill. The diamond-esque rug shown on the left was priced at $1,078. On the other hand, I found that Overstock.com has a lot of options in the 7’x10′ category (a whopping 1,326 options, holy hell). This “super-refined” jute rug (shown right) was priced at $338–yeah!–and includes both the blacks and the tans that I really liked in the West Elm splurge. Ye be good at hiding crazy dog fur now, you hear?
Urban Outfitters, king of all printed and easily dirtied rugs, surprised me with its Verginia Berber Rug offered in a 8’x10′ size, presumably not including the cute tassels. Bonus: Color options. I’m digging all three for our living room, and priced at just $559 each, not so bad, I just wonder how well they’ll hold up.
ABC Carpet & Home is 99.9% of the time out of my price range but I’ve really gravitated to its Cochin rug, a jute with a cool weave aesthetic, a little more interesting than the custom Pottery Barn in my opinion, without being markedly more expensive. The repeating pattern lends itself to some off-sizes too, one being 8’x11′ which would certainly fit our length needs. The cost? Just $1,199.
Now help a girl out and do share some of your favorite off-size rug resources, ok? Thanks in advance!

I have had good luck going to a local carpet store and picking out a remnant. Many stores will cut the remnant to your exact desired size and then bind the edges. You can also buy a nice cushy pad there to go under the carpet. After looking at many large area rugs online, this was by far the best option in terms of price.
Great tip, Laura!! Are you limited then to the plush-type carpets or will they do the same with jute or other woven rugs?
I’ve found more than just plush at my store. My experience with jute plus pets plus kids is that carpet will hold up better too over the long run. Also you can usually do a little haggling with a local store. Say, ask for 20% off the remnant.
RugsUSA has been my go-to recently as far as rugs. The prices are definitely budget-friendly, but it’s sort of annoying that you can’t browse by size (unless I’m just missing that option). O.co and even World Market can have some pretty good deals, too. Not too sure about odd sizes, but I think you should be able to find something that works!
And, of course, I still love the IKEA TARNBY rug, which comes in a 6’7″ x 9’10” version, for only $149. The two we have are great at hiding dog hair (at least with our white dogs).

Mandi @ Vintage Revivals pieced together several smaller rugs to make one larger one. This method wouldn’t work for every style rug out there of course, but I think that it works pretty well with the room it’s in. http://www.vintagerevivals.com/2013/02/chindi-licious-how-to-make-huge-rug.html
