I’m clearly getting my act together with the whole finishing-the-front-entryway thing. I showed you the doorbell that was installed earlier in the week, and am stoked to report that I also finally picked new house numbers. Although not like what I originally wanted, and yes, I have been looking since January, the new numbers will do for now. Without finding something colorful and unique that resonated with me within my price range and more importantly, my home style, I briefly considering DIYing something interesting. Ultimately though, I caved on a simple model from True Value. Not bad at all, just a little more cookie cutter than I want to be overall.
Anything was an improvement from the cheapo cracking plastic models that had been on the house before (pre-replacing the storm door).
Anyways, I had to do something; I had spent months now attaching to a piece of paper to the siding when I had craigslist peeps coming by. Super classy. Definitely made me less sketch of a Craigslist sales lady, I’m sure.
As I said, I bought my new goods at True Value. In the store, I actually considered two different models. I was going to splurge and pay $2 more per number for the chunkier ones (at $7.29 a pop) but at the last minute worried that they’d be too wide for the narrow door trim that I wanted to hang them on.
So, home the thin numbers came. Not an appalling typeface like so many out there (typography nerds may agree), and even Pete approved. They were nice and hefty too, not chincy or malleable in any way, and at $5.29/each, it was an easy purchase to make.
I taped them up on the front entryway at a few different heights until I found a location that felt just right. Oh lookie, I actually did this install just before the new doorbell went up. Don’t mind that mess.
And then I shifted them down (so indecisive) and screwed them into place. They actually look better than I expected. Much less harsh compared to the set that hung there before.
Subtlety for the win. Cody’s also not so subtly hiding my reflection in the glass. And this isn’t to say that I still wouldn’t buy up a cooler set of numbers if they came my way, so if you know of any you think I’d like, do send me a photo.

Those look great!
I’ve been pondering house numbers for about as long as I’ve been pondering a doorbell. Last year I made some with 6″ square tiles & scrapbook paper, but now I’m thinking I want to change it up. I pinned a crap ton of them to my Curb Appeal board a while back. I’m currently leaning towards some like this, but I’m indecisive…
LOVE the numbers you pinned. Beautiful color too. I also noticed you pinning some great vintage doorbell encasements that I liked a lot.
I love them, too! The shipping seems a little steep, but then, I wouldn’t want them to break in the mail.
I’m a pin-aholic. There are a few other things I haven’t pinned yet. Maybe I’ll do a post about what I have in mind for house numbers, doorbells, etc.
Where do you see shipping on those? Since that store’s local to me, does it seem like something I could buy and ship for less? I really, really wish I went to that store. For $7/each, I would have bought them on the spot.
I tried estimating shipping on them a while back, but I think maybe they changed the site since then? I think back then there was only one option for shipping, and I know shipping was pretty expensive on the bathroom stuff I ordered from their sister-company. I test-added it to my cart today, and it seems like shipping is more reasonable if I went with the standard option. It was about $11 for 4 tiles. Not sure if you would be able to ship it for any less than that?
You could always grab some for your house, since they’re local. Is your mailbox attached to the house or on a post by the street? If you decide to get the tiles and have a post mailbox then maybe you could use the metal numbers on that?
I feel like I should add that I love the ones you chose, too! They look really nice with your storm door. :)
Thanks Cait! I think the only solution to this whole shipping-numbers-from-Historic-Houseparts thing is just having you come up and buy them in person. If that’s not possible, I WILL send you photos of them from real life and buy/ship them for you and try to get the price lower than $11.
The mailboxes in my neighborhood are fortunately-or-unfortunately on the house and not by the curb, but if the tiles measured narrowly enough they’d be cute right where the silver ones now hang.
Haha I would love to come up an buy them in person! And if any of that driftwood is still on the beach near you I would smuggle the crap out of some of it. Airport security would be like “what the heck is in your suitcase, lady?” Not sure that is in the budget though. :(
Other photos would be great, and if you could ship them for less that $11 that would be fantastic!
Our mailboxes are on the house here, too. I haven’t decided if that’s good or not.
The tiles may fit, the site says they are 2.5″ wide. How wide is your trim there?
PS- Along the same line as “how many door knockers is too many?”, how many house numbers are too many? I keep falling in love with house numbers. And I need someone to paint numbers on their front door so I can live vicariously through them. (Every time I see super-cute painted numbers on Pinterest I get jealous. Our door is mostly glass and doesn’t directly face the street.) Also, I feel like it could be cute to have house numbers on the post of your porch railngs (but possibly too low to be very helpful.)
Maybe I’m just a typography nerd?
I love the painted door numbers too. I didn’t even consider it as an option but could envision using a nice sans serif on my next house if it’s a contemporary ranch. And now I want artichokes because of that yummy holiday wreath.
That’s pretty much what I was thinking, if we ever get a more solid door. You can’t see our door from the street, but I still think it’d be cute.
LOL! I love your temporary paper sign numbers, haha. The new numbers look great :)
That is a perfect font for that door! Great job!
Thanks Kate + Holyoke :)
