Pete and I have been setting up a major family file backup system over the last few weeks, and in the process of organizing, merging, and purging, I came across photos from a project that was a huge flop: Ombre-inspired dip dying. Is that trend past yet? Please yes.
Here’s what not to do: 1) dye cotton cloths using RIT dye; 2) allow to dry completely; 3) fill a shallow tray with bleach, and dip ends of the dyed cloth into it allowing the bleach to absorb upward like a litmus test; 4) hang dry on a drying rack outdoors; 5) curse when the light breeze flicks the drippy bleach onto the previously dyed areas.
Nothing ombre about this, even if you ignore the spotted beach spots.
Just file this one away as a #tbt project failure, admit defeat, and celebrate an honest learning curve.
Where have you belly flopped with a DIY project?

I’m pretty dang crafty, so it was a big shock to me when I went to frost a cake and try as I might, I couldn’t get it smooth/crumb free to save my life! They make it look so easy on the food network!
I always think that they must have better “tools” than I do. And more patience. My frosting is always crumb-y. Delicious, but photographically sad.
I would think you would dip-dye ombre by dipping white fabric in dye progressively longer as you shorten the length you are dyeing – no bleach necessary? I always flop when it comes to precision diy like cutting, leveling, sewing a straight line :(
Yeah, I did it in reverse I guess, thinking the litmus thing would work differently. And I’m thoroughly convinced that no one in the world can sew in a straight line (they’re all lying), so you’re not alone there.
