Blue Glass Goodies

January 7, 2013

In preparing for our wedding, I sourced local salvage shops with greater than normal frequency to find candles, votives, vases, trays, scrap wood, you name it, and sometimes, which, less face it, was almost all of the time, I ended up buying things for our home or for future projects instead of buying specifically for the big day. As if you can’t relate to that.

This trio blue glass jars was among one of my favorite splurges at our local VOA. Sold separately for $2/each, they cost a whopping $6.

Pretty blue glass salvage find.

They were made in Belgium, I can tell my raised lettering on the bottom of each glass, and they’re charming; they’re molded glass, as there’s a seam along the side of each container, but the blue is consistent and striking and a great addition to our collection. Another regular salvager (weirdly, I’m starting to see the same people in my thrifting travels) commented to me that he had admired matching larger scale containers of the same blue glass the day before, as if it was a whole set being sold separately and I just barely missed out on a steal of a blue glass deal (blërg!*).

I came home to find that they’re Belgian spice/apothecary bottles, and sell for a $10-25 each on places like etsy and ebay. I especially like how the round glass tops sit gently and loosely into the base, the lack of complete air-tightness gives it more of a vintage feel to me than common household containers you’d find in stores these days.

Pretty blue glass salvage find.

To scale their diminutive size to something you might be more familiar with, try this sample of blue glass with a side of Sriracha:

Pretty blue glass salvage find.

Right now, I have them displayed with purpose on our bathroom window ledge holding cotton swabs, cotton balls, and an assortment of hair ties (which I can never seem to find when I need one).

Assorted glass containers on the ledge of our bathroom window.

What’ve valued items have you salvaged lately?

*Aw yeah, 30 Rock’s back on 1/10!

Whoa, whoa, whoa, Sriracha for scale?! (Although it is good on fish tacos. And everything.)

Love those blue jars :) And I can never find hair ties when I need one either!

More scaleable than a grapefruit, and more accessible than a Starbucks venti cup. ;)

    Bahaha! This is very true.

Also, dang it, now I want tacos. At 10am.

I found a super cute white and gold cake stand this past weekend while thrifting for $3–it was just way too cute to pass up! I did a quick web search for it, and the exact same one is going for about $20 on etsy/ebay. All of my favorite unique housewares come from thrift stores.

Love that you spell blerg the way it’s spelled on Liz’s “home office” furniture boxes! lol

I also am in love with the blue jars. However, what-in-the-world is AOA? Am I able to buy the jars there?

VOA is Volunteers of America, a secondhand store. The jars were a donation resale at that particular location. You may not be able to find them locally, but if you search around etsy or eBay, I’m sure you can find the same design through other sellers!
