The Virtual Tearsheet for our Mid-Century Ranch

August 14, 2013

Let’s do this whole little inspired performance in reverse. Pretend you saw this yesterday, and yesterday’s post on Julia’s bedroom graphics today.

Our house is bound to look nothing like the beauties shown in these photos, and even if it does, it’s probably years down the road, but as we’ve both gathered dozens/hundreds of photos of inspired rooms over the past few years thanks to sites like Houzz and Pinterest, it’s worth peeking back through those files from time to time so we stay mindful of the path we want to choose for our home’s design and decor.

I pulled a few of my own favorites, ones that feature details like white walls and floor lamps, confined areas that are filled with color and pattern, a mix of old-old and new-new as it relates to furniture styles, shapes, and finishes, and colorful accents in art, upholstery, and decor. It’s kind of the inverted version of our last house, which had colorful walls and generally more neutral accents.

Inspiration gallery of rooms to guide the design of our mid-century ranch. I don’t have all of the original sources for these photos, but I’m happy to add them if you recognize. Starting from the top left:

  • let’s install some of those windows, shall we? great chairs too // via the brick house, original source unknown
  • maybe not stripes, but I love the idea of a strong pattern in a small space, like our half bath or entryway // kelly green interiors, original source unknown
  • mid-century shaped, mustard yellow chairs // apartment therapy (the whole house is an inspiration!)
  • inspired kids room or workspace // aesthetic outburst
  • whether we eventually invest in eames or not, another brightly colored chair in a great shape // desire to inspire, original source unknown
  • MUR tiles make this streamlined space so homey // MUR
  • The blue washed brick lends similarly to the blue stone flagstone in our living room, I love this space // fauxology, emily summers in conjunction with coleman coker

I own a mid century home too and I often find myself browsing Houzz almost drooling over what our house could be some day. What I really like about the pictures that you chose, is how they don’t exclusively include mid century modern pieces. I think its really nice to throw in something a little older, newer or more rustic. That’s what gives it character and makes it feel homey instead of living in an art gallery! :)

Also, I just wanted to say that I have really enjoyed reading your blog and see your progress! My husband and I have one too, JJModern.com. We have really enjoyed sharing our home and projects. Check it out if you like!

Thanks for stopping by Jennifer! I’ll check out your blog too. We’re with you on the mixing-it-up in terms of what we buy/salvage/make for this place. Right now, I’m dead set on finding a mid-century coffee table, for instance, because I think it’ll be the perfect complement to a modern couch that we bought. But at the same time, stores like Crate & Barrel and West Elm have collections (like the James Harrison and John Vogel collections at WE) that lend to the look we’re going for so much… I’m not sure how it’ll come together (or how fast!) but it’s exciting to see the space begin to transition.
