Hack This: How To Make A Stroller Cup Holder

February 15, 2016

This post was originally published on DIY Network’s blog Made + Remade in April 2015.

Lightweight strollers are where it’s at, in my opinion. Compact enough to fit into the car, no frills to weigh it down, easy to navigate through stores, but only one downside to the ones I’ve used – no cup holders. We can all appreciate how nice it is to have a travel mug of coffee with us when we’re out and about, and having a sippy cup or bottle stored upright and within easy reach is important too, which is why I set out to create an easy DIY stroller cup holder.

How to Make Cup Holders for Your Stroller

It works perfectly for me and my stroller. Refer to the tutorial below to see how you can make an inexpensive, convenient cup holder for your small stroller too.

  • Time: 10 minutes
  • Cost: $15

Step 1

You know those over-the-door shoe storage systems? Buy one. You can find them in assorted colors and materials – I recommend a breathable material (not plastic) like canvas, or mesh.

Upcycle a common shoe organizer into a cup holder.

Step 2

Trim two of the shoe spaces from the lower-most section using sharp scissors. Be sure not to disrupt the pre-sewn seams. You want your two new “cup holders” to be in tact.

Step 3

There are a number of ways you can attach your cup holder to your stroller, and much of it has to do with the construct of your stroller. Heavy-duty Velcro was ideal for me. Tying it on with a thin rope may work better for your product. If you’re tying it on, you may want to consider using shoe storage sections from the top-most area of the original storage product… there are usually eyelets in the material that you use to attach the hanging fabric to the over-the-door hooks, and those pre-made holes would be an easy and secure way to tie the new cup holder to your stroller.)

Step 4

Trim and apply your Velcro pieces to the backside of the new cup holder.

Step 5

Attach the other side of the Velcro to your stroller. In my stroller, it fits well against the under-seat storage area, and is the perfect place to hold a travel mug, child’s bottle, or snack container within reach.
