Holiday Happiness: DIY Portland Cement Letters

There’s a definite joy that accompanies this big holiday season, so why not embrace it, make it your own, and be outwardly merry?

There are few workable materials that I like more than portland cement. Put it right up there with Sculpey clay and Sugru. I’ve used this fine cement mixture a few times in the past to make things such as planters and door stops, but when I came across a set of ABC cookie cutters, I thought it might be fun to try making cement letters spelling something endearing for the holiday season.

Start by working on a smooth surface – I chose a piece of scrap wood. Spoon the well-mixed cement right into the letter forms. I didn’t find that much cement or water leaks through the bottom, but I keep my cement mixture moderately thick.

Allow the cement to cure in form for 6-8 hours. In my experience, there’s less of a chance of them breaking when you remove them from the mold while they’re still a little moist, so pop them free carefully and let them continue to dry for several more days in the open – you’ll see the color of the cement gradually lighten as it dries.
