The Tale Of Goldilocks Bentwood

October 22, 2012

It’s been 2 years since I brought home a bargain-priced ribcage-like bentwood magazine holder from a garage sale. I had fine intentions of repainting it way back then since the white finish on it had splintered and begun to wear away, although in the time since I made that mental note, many months and other projects have passed and I found that Mr. Bentwood was better suited to hold my then like-new 2010 issues of Harvard Business Review and Better Homes & Gardens, and act as a magnet to mammoth tumbleweeds of Bernese Mountain Dog fur.

A bentwood magazine rack and dust collector.

Out with the old magazines, and in with some Testor’s gloss gold enamel that I bought for $2.50 using a coupon at Michaels. This particular spray paint is amazing, at least any time I’ve used it. The spray, a finish sold in the craft and hobby section of Michaels and commonly used for to-scale models, is more consistent than many traditional spray paints that I’ve toyed with – its a little more targeted, dries really fast, and its coverage is unmatched; those might not be the official Testor’s sales points (or come to find, they are), but for this project and the sailboat that I painted last spring, I’ve had really great results.

Using Testors Spray (and also coating part of the driveway in metallic gold, don't tell Pete).

Making the decision to move the magazine rack into a more purposeful space was a good one. It forced me to part ways with my old magazines (after flipping through each and every one of the 25 issues to make sure there wasn’t something mindblowing within). It’s much more at home in its new space, filled with kid-lit, and presented as a shiny gold accent to the birch furniture and pink and white walls. (Psst, I’ve been on a mini-mission to add lots of gold in there after finishing her awesome gold rug.)

All of the detailing in the bentwood is now nicely preserved in a gold enamel, shiny and to be appreciated for years to come.

Seriously, the coverage of this stuff is amazing. A single coat is flawlessly shiny and drip-free, even on this bentwood rack with all of its nooks and crannies, and after a few days of use, the base of the frame doesn’t appear to be wearing from books being dragged and dropped within it.

Does anyone out there turn to Testors for around-the-house projects? I’m considering testing it out on a real piece of furniture next, not sure how it’ll hold up in comparison to its spray paint brand competitors.
